Shubhanshu Shukla set to make history as second Indian at ISS

Indian astronaut Subhanshu Shukla has described the preparations for the forthcoming Axiom-4 mission as an “amazing journey,” expressing gratitude for being part of an endeavour that is “much larger than yourself.” The 39-year-old Indian Air Force pilot, affectionately known as “Shux,” is poised to become the second Indian to travel to the International Space Station (ISS).

Shukla will join three other crew members in making the journey to the ISS aboard SpaceX’s Dragon spacecraft. The launch is scheduled for Tuesday, June 10, 2025, at 5:52 p.m. IST, with the spacecraft mounted on a Falcon 9 rocket set to lift off from the Kennedy Space Centre in Florida.

This mission marks a significant milestone for India, coming 41 years after Rakesh Sharma became the first Indian to travel to space. In 1984, Sharma spent eight days in orbit aboard the Soviet Union’s Soyuz spacecraft. Shukla has often cited Sharma as his idol and inspiration.

Speaking ahead of the launch, Shukla reflected on the collective effort behind the mission, stating that he feels “extremely fortunate” to be part of something that transcends individual achievement. His participation in the Axiom-4 mission is seen as a testament to India’s growing capabilities in space exploration and a source of national pride.

As the countdown to the launch continues, excitement is mounting among scientists, engineers, and the public. Shukla’s journey is expected to inspire a new generation of Indian astronauts and strengthen the nation’s presence in the global space community. The mission stands as a symbol of international collaboration and technological progress, with Shukla at the forefront of this historic chapter for India.
